Drawn from The Arts Club’s permanent collection, developed over the past decade, this stairway presentation brings together a range of contemporary artists working with photography. Taken together, the works reveal recurring themes of surrealism and representation. Artists such as Guy Bourdin, Noé Sendas, and Eva Stenram invite a sense of surrealism in their dislocation of the body. Linder Sterling and John Stezaker explore the politics of representation, engaging feminist critique and gendered representation respectively. John Baldessari and Anne Collier introduce a conceptual approach to representation, using their work to examine how meaning is projected onto images. Installed along the stairway, the exhibition invites a gradual encounter with works that engage the constructed, mediated nature of the modern image.
